The media for Music Man is paper bag cast over sculpted sand, colored with acrylic paint in a fresco manner. The intent behind the piece was to abstract a violin, exploding and layering details of the instrument in a not-so-exacting way. Only when I lifted the paper mold from the sand and started coloring, did I see the face begin to emerge in the piece. It reminded me of Picasso. I love to work with paper. It feels so natural. The depth in the swoops and swirls traced over sand or wire is embedded with texture highlighted by layers of paint rubbed into and scumbled over the surface. Look for the "cut-outs" I also photographed on this piece in the Natural Texture Gallery. I especially like the way the textures affect everyday objects. Especially the coffee cup. Scroll down!
When asked what I "do", I generally answer' "Yes". I have worked professionally in pencil, pen, paint than 40 years and in digital media almost as long. Change is important to me as it lays the ground for play and exploring which is a vital part of everything I do. An illustrator at heart, whether my work is an abstract, figurative, mural or a cartoon, I tend to tell stories with my art.
