When I paint in the consciousness style I see what emerges and try not to exert control while being responsive. As with any of my abstract paintings, what you "abstract" from it is completely up to you. For me, seeing the form of a hummingbird in the channels opening up beyond the sharp edges in the foreground, I titled this painting to encompass two meanings from opposite sides of the planet: "Hum" as the sound of a hummingbird's wings and a also as a mantra seed sound. In ancient times an Aztec warrior was believed to become a hummingbird if he died honorably in the field. The Buddhist monk Kukai (774-835) is quoted as saying of the Hum seed sound, "great compassion is the root, and skillful means are the ultimate" which also describes an honorable warrior. Without interpretation, the colors still play out nicely among all the surfaces available onsite. (scroll down to see)
When asked what I "do", I generally answer' "Yes". I have worked professionally in pencil, pen, paint than 40 years and in digital media almost as long. Change is important to me as it lays the ground for play and exploring which is a vital part of everything I do. An illustrator at heart, whether my work is an abstract, figurative, mural or a cartoon, I tend to tell stories with my art.
